Sir Elton John has been Crocodile Rocking his way around the world on a seemingly never-ending farewell tour. The jaunt began in September 2018 and is scheduled to run through December 2020, but who knows! Apparently "goodbye" seems to be the hardest word.
At 72, the Piano Man is still wowing fans night after night with his stacked setlist, elaborate costume changes and intricate lights and visuals. But what keeps people coming back is the powerful combination of his voice and his piano.
Fresh off a lengthy North American leg, the yellow brick road has brought the singer down under, where he's doing one final lap in cities throughout Australia and New Zealand through March.
Check out some highlights from his Australian ventures so far!
December 1 – Perth
The Rocket Man's Australian tour began with a pair of shows at HBF Park in Perth – one of the most isolated major cities in the world – but it was anything but private. In fact, John made international headlines for an incident that happened in the middle of his second show.
During his performance, he saw a woman getting ejected by security. "You don't treat girls like that," he shouted. "Leave her alone, you turds!" You can check out the colorful rant below, courtesy of a fan who captured the entire moment on camera.
(If you've never seen an adorable man in a sparkly suit get angry before, you're going to love this).
But back to the music. That night, the singer performed a whopping 25-song set (including a two-song encore) with hits spanning his entire career.
After opening with "Bennie and the Jets," John treated fans to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road classics "All the Girls Love Alice," "Candle in the Wind," "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" (he closed the show with a rendition of the album's titular track).
Other highlights included Madman Across the Water tracks "Indian Sunset" and "Levon," as well as Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player favorites "Crocodile Rock" and "Daniel."
December 10 – Melbourne
John's first of four shows at the Rod Laver Arena in the Victorian capital was one for the books.
Fans heard greatest hits ranging from "The Bitch is Back" and "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" to "Philadelphia Freedom" and "I'm Still Standing," with a mixture of lights, costume changes and visuals that brought the songs to life (his exuberance and killer moves certainly helped)!
December 18 – Brisbane
The 72-year-old kicked off the first night of his two-night stand at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre last night (Australian time!), and let's just say fans will likely remember this one for a long, long time.
John was welcomed by a crowd of 14,000, and once again delivered the goods. Things got sentimental in performances of "Border Song" and "Your Song," but bounced back during anthems "Tiny Dancer" and "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues."
The superstar picks things back up December 19 with another show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre before heading to Sydney to close out 2019.
