Desert Daze 2019 delivered once again by setting up one of the most eclectic line ups California has seen in recent years. Gracing the stage as headliners on Saturday night, October 12th, was none other than Ween, performing right after an amazingly psycho performance by Devo.
It was stimulation overload in the best way you could imagine, especially since fans and festival-goers got to experience the prolific, experimental rockers perform their deliciously deranged 1994 album Chocolate and Cheese in its entirety. As any Ween fan would guess, the 55-minute record in its sequencing order translated handsomely to the stage.
The set came equipped with plenty of fog, trippy lasers + lights, and endless soloing with epic jams that made the experience far more superior than just listening to the record. Gene Ween strutted his stuff with his croons, squeals, shouts, rasps, accents, and falsettos. Then you have Dean Ween who was aimlessly shredding barefoot on his guitar and giving all his best Dean guitar faces for good measure. "Voodoo Lady" featured some of the best soloing in the whole performance, and the rest of the band sounded tight as they tied it all together.
Performing the full album meant the twisted "Candi" got its live debut, and it was more warped when Dean took over the vocals after proclaiming that Gene "sucked." No other words to really explain it so I'll leave this fan-caught video right here:
After they finished up all 16-songs, they encored with four hits including "Touch My Tooter," "You Fucked Up," "Someday" and they bid farewell after "Buckingham Green."
