Liam Gallagher Hooks Oasis Fans and Beyond with "Why Me? Why Not"

Liam Gallagher dropped his sophomore album Why Me? Why Not today, September 20th. The album follows up his solo debut As You Were which was welcomed with warm and open arms by Oasis fans alike.

This new album continues where he left off, by looking back with a tinge of nostalgia, but this time he's also leaping forth into this new era of his life.

While Liam has self-proclaimed himself as not a "songwriter," he's recruited once again songwriters and producers Greg Kurstin and Andrew Wyatt, (Beck, Adele, etc), and had them co-write on every song.

The result are songs that are catchy and often feel like an evolution of what Oasis might have been, if you can imagine all of Noel's loud staple guitar parts out of the picture.

With that said, the absence of Noel's wall of guitars and anthemic songwriting appears to have humbled the singer/tambourine player. As a hidden gift, it's offered him more space to stretch out his voice, to even sing softly at times.

You'll hear this in songs like "Once," "Alright Now," and "Gone." But Oasis isn't all you'll think of when listening to this album. Liam has written an album that also pays homage the Beatles in some of its songs. The title of the album itself is taken from the titles of two different Lennon drawing.

In "Once" you'll be reminded of Lennon's "Jealous Guy," with lyrics like:

“I think it’s true what they say that the dream is borrowed/You give it back tomorrow.”

"Once"

While "Alright Now" can send you right into the lap of George Harrison's "Isn't it a Pity" with the vibrating guitar parts. The album ends on "Glimmer," a song that might as well be in the same family as "Here Comes the Sun." It's a hand-clapping, foot-stomping sing-a-long that leaves the listener walking away with literally a glimmer after the album concludes.

"Glimmer"

You'll definitely find those Oasis Easter eggs throughout the album, though. For instance, there's no shortage of hard hitting harmonicas and tambourines. On track two, "One of Us," he even gives a nod to "Live Forever" when he sings:

“I think it’s true what they say that the dream is borrowed/You give it back tomorrow.”

"One of Us"

Gallagher will be setting out on a tour in support of the album this fall. He'll do a short round in the States before heading to Europe/UK for a massive one that extends into 2020.

He's already performed quite a few songs off the album this past year, including: "Shockwave," "The River," "Once," "Now That I've Found You," "One of Us," "Why Me? Why Not" and "Gone."
