Q&A: Rapper Token Talks Quarantine and More

Massachusetts based rapper Token has released his highly anticipated single "30 People" via his newly announced label in partnership with Atlantic Records, Never Too Different. While the single showcases Token's lyrical talents, the video for "30 People" showcases his ability to adapt and step up to the plate, literally taking on the role of thirty people for the visual that was shot during quarantine.

Watch the incredibly creative clip for "30 People" below.

We caught up with the freestylist to find out how he's passing the time in quarantine, Black Lives Matter, his thoughts on the state of the world, and more!

How are you participating in the Black Lives Matter movement?

Other than donating to organizations that help Black communities, it was also my mission to educate myself. As much as I felt passionate and educated on the topic before (being that I grew up in a household that has always spoken up against this issue) I knew I had much more to learn. I did a lot of watching and reading. I learned a lot. I made some posts about the issue, a couple including the importance of understanding white privilege, and I was honestly shocked to see some people who don’t understand the issue. I think at this point the most impactful thing I can do is not only increase my knowledge on the statistics and history, but also try to open the minds of some of my younger supporters who we’re brought up in a more closed-minded household than mine.

What have you learned since this movement started?

I’ve learned a lot of history. I’ve learned about the slavery that continued for 80 years after abolishment that they called “convict leasing.” I’ve learned more about the Jim Crow laws and red lining and how long lasting those affects were. What I’ve been most shocked to learn though is how many people don’t understand the real issues... even some hip hop fans I’ve seen. It blows my mind to see a large amount of people interested in “Black culture” but not interested on how to save Black lives.

What Black voices would you like to elevate?

Some documentaries I’d recommend are Slavery By Another Name, 13th and I Am Not Your Negro.

How have you been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic?

I am one of the lucky ones. Although the lack of traveling has gotten a bit in my way, I have a studio at my house so I can work from here. I am blessed to also have a somewhat extensive independent catalog so I’m not forced outside if I need to make money. People have it much worse than me. But it does get a little lonely sometimes lol.

Paint us a picture of your current headquarters

My house in Massachusetts is in a quiet neighborhood so pretty easy to focus. The studio in my basement is almost done being built. It’s just me and one engineer usually in here.

What activities have you been doing to keep yourself busy?

Writing, basketball, and Super Smash Bro’s.

What movies and TV have you been watching?

I don’t watch much TV but some movies I’ve recently watched are Us, Arrival, Taxi Driver and Fight Club.

What music or podcasts have you been listening to?

I watch the Joe Budden podcast a lot. Sometimes Joe Rogan.

Are you planning on tuning into or producing any livestream performances?

No. I’m not really into that. I’d rather just wait to have the real thing.

What’s your best song for getting through a scary/confusing time?

Probably “Homies.” Just a feel good song that may make you feel better.

Where can fans get the latest info and updates from you?

I’m @tokenhiphop everywhere.
