Angles & Airwaves Kick Off Comeback Tour With Live Debuts

Angels & Airwaves are back!

The space-rock outfit just kicked off their first tour in seven years with a show in Solana Beach, California. The Tom DeLonge fronted group– backed by members David Kennedy (guitars, keys), Ilan Rubin (drums, percussion) and Matt Rubano (bass)– took the stage at Belly Up Tavern on August 28 and performed a 20-song main set with a two-song encore.

The band live-debuted six new songs, including "Overload," "Paralyzed," "The Wolfpack," "Kiss With a Spell," "Rebel Girl," "Anomaly" and "Kiss & Tell," the latter being their recently released new single!

“The beginning of the song is really an ode to The Beach Boys," DeLonge said.

"It opens with three-part harmonies to create an introduction with multi-dimensionality. We wanted to create a sound that had electronic elements right alongside classic rock and pop punk melodic structures. Lyrically, this song is specifically about balancing on the edge of a razor blade. Doing something you’re not supposed to be doing, and although you might die while doing it, it’s still very much keeping you feeling alive."

The rest of the set consisted of songs from their entire discography, like "It Hurts," "Anxiety," "Surrender," "The Adventure" as well as acoustic renditions of classic Blink-182 songs "I Miss You" and "Aliens Exist," and a cover of Box Car Racer's "There Is."

We may not be storming Area 51 anymore, but that didn't stop the group from bringing an otherworldly performance to the stage.

Angels & Airwaves are hitting the road this fall to support some forthcoming new music.

"It’s coming out with a movie," DeLonge said, of the new songs.

"I co-wrote a movie and it goes into production in just a few weeks. Then when I come out of that and go into post, we’ll score it. That will kind of dictate the second half of the album. Both of those will come out together somewhere around the tour or shortly thereafter. It’s going to be hard to say because this is a big project."
