On This Day in 2017 Bob Dylan Plays Epic 21-Song Set in Stockholm

On this day in Setlist History, Bob Dylan finally accepted his Nobel Prize in Literature (months after the ceremony) and performed the first of two concerts at the Stockholm Waterfront in Sweden.

Dylan was awarded the prestigious book prize "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition," according to the Swedish Academy. It took more than two weeks for Dylan to acknowledge the award before ultimately deciding against receiving it in person, saying he had "pre-existing commitments."

Dylan eventually made his way to Stockholm ... nearly four months later. He had a scheduled gig on April 1, 2017 at the Stockholm Waterfront, and received his medal at a private event before the show.

"The good news is that the Swedish Academy and Bob Dylan have decided to meet this weekend," the secretary of the Swedish Academy Sara Danius wrote in a blog post.

"The Academy will then hand over Dylan's Nobel diploma and the Nobel medal, and congratulate him on the Nobel Prize in Literature. The setting will be small and intimate, and no media will be present; only Bob Dylan and members of the Academy will attend, all according to Dylan's wishes."

That night, Dylan performed a 21-song set at the Stockholm Waterfront, which included a rendition of "Standing in the Doorway" off 1997's Time Out of Mind for the first time since 2005.

Despite the concert taking place just one day after the release of his covers album Triplicate, Dylan only played one song off the new album: Frank Sinatra's "I Could Have Told You."

He did, however, perform a handful of covers from some of his other albums. He played Shadows in the Night tracks "Autumn Leaves," "Why Try to Change Me Now" and "Full Moon and Empty Arms" as well as Fallen Angels' "All or Nothing at All."

The rest of the set was Tempest heavy, with performances of "Duquesne Whistle," "Pay in Blood," "Soon After Midnight," "Scarlet Town" and "Long and Wasted Years." He also played a few favorites like "Highway 61 Revisited," "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Tangled Up in Blue."

More on the Nobel Prize ceremony

The Nobel Prize ceremony took place four months before Dylan's Stockholm shows, on December 10, 2016. Since Dylan himself had opted not to attend the ceremony, the U.S. ambassador to Sweden Azita Raji read Dylan's acceptance speech and fellow folk legend Patti Smith sang "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" in his place.

Watch Smith's powerful performance below:

Dylan released the video of his Nobel Lecture in Literature on June 5, 2017: a 27-minute recording over an instrumental arrangement by jazz pianist Alan Pasqua.
