Encore with an @Set tag

Posted 28 Feb 2015, 11:29:37

If you want to add a setlist with an @Set tag with the encore, here is the method to do so!

This will be helpful for artists such as Soundgarden, where Chris Cornell (lead singer) may perform an encore solo.

If you simply use @Set[Chris Cornell solo], the Average Setlist feature will not function properly, as it can't detect the encore.

The previous workaround was to simply create an encore the usual way, and denote in an @Info tag at the end of the setlist that Chris Cornell performed the encore solo.

However, there is now a much better way of doing it!

Simply use the @Set tag as you would usually, then to denote it as an encore, place two blank lines between it and the songs either side. Here is an example, using a Paul Simon & Sting setlist.

Save the edit, and you should have an encore WITH an @Set tag, as here!

Unfortunately, the one downfall of this trick is that subsequent edits will by default revert to only the @Set tag, ignoring the encore. The fix is to repeat the above procedure each time a new edit is performed, to reproduce the encore with @Set tag information. Thanks to PhilippeLandry for pointing this bug out!

Having trouble adding a setlist of an artist with a common name?

Posted 16 Mar 2015, 16:12:35

James Brown is a great example. If you search for James Brown when adding a setlist, you will not find the “Godfather of Soul” in the list of results.

The solution is to search for him on musicbrainz, and then follow the link to his musicbrainz artist page. In the URL, you will find his MusicBrainz ID.

Copy this, and then paste it into the artist field on the Add Setlist page, followed by a trailing space:
“20ff3303-4fe2-4a47-a1b6-291e26aa3438 “

Then, just select the correct (only) James Brown from the dropdown list and create your setlist!

PS: James Brown's MBID is also listed on his setlist.fm page, but it's good to know where that information comes from.

Keyboard shortcuts

Tucked away in the tutorial is a section on keyboard shortcuts for the add/edit setlist content page. Check it out at the bottom of the page.

Take notes during a concert

Posted 8 May 2015, 13:21:59

A lot of people use the notes app of their mobile phone or a plain old pencil to keep track of the setlist during a concert.

There's a feature online that makes it possible using the actual edit form. It hasn't been advertised much, as it might be unstable, but for the fearless among you, here's how it works:

You should be able to use the edit songs page of the setlist to do exactly this. It's designed to work offline, i.e. all songs ever performed by the artist (and as covers by other artists) are loaded and are available for the autocomplete. The autocomplete works completely offline, so when at a “Mothers of Invention” gig, by entering “Mama” it should suggest you “My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama” even when you're in a club 15 floors below the ground without connectivity (you should have opened it somewhere having internet before of course).

I know there's the problem of the session timeout or somebody else editing the setlist meanwhile, but there's another (hidden) feature for that: the current version of your setlist edit is saved locally in your browser (using HTML Local Storage, there's no actual access to your phone ;-)). So let's assume you wrote down the whole setlist using the form without internet connection and you open up your mobile browser on the day after the concert: of course your session timed out and you might be redirected to the start page. But if you then access the edit page of the very concert you've taken notes of, a message should appear that says something like “There's a stored setlist from earlier, restore?”. Tap “yes” and the fields should be filled with the setlist you've written down last night.

By the way, this works for any device. You can try it out by editing any setlist and then hit “reload” in your browser.

Please share any experience you make with this feature!

There is another way to add artists that have multiple listings, in this case James Brown.

Type James Brown into the artist field then hit the spacebar on your computer. Do NOT enter a venue or date.

Then hit Create Setlist or the enter key on your computer keyboard. A drop down window with all the artists named James Brown with a description for most will appear.

Click on the circle to the left of the artist you want, in this case James Brown (“The Godfather of Soul”).

Enter venue information and the date then hit Create Setlist like usual and the setlist will be created with the artist that you entered.

Adding a historical concert

Would you like to add a concert before the (current) cutoff year of 1938?

Just use the following URL, replacing yyyy-mm-dd with your desired setlist date.

https://www.setlist.fm/edit?date=yyyy-mm-dd

How do I add details for a closed venue, such as address, start-date, close-date, etc? I see such information for some venues but I haven't found any form elements to support adding them or instructions for how to do it. Appreciate pointers to the instructions.

Only Roadies and Moderators can add venue details. You have to contact one of us with the info. Hopefully providing a source for the details you want added though that isn't absolutely necessary if you personally know about the venue. You could post it here or on my homepage and we will get it done.

I want to add an improv session to some setlists. However, being improv, it's always a different performance and – depending on the source – is either not listed at all or listed with various names, such as “SESSION“, “session 1″ or “vocal & piano session” on the Bluray's tracklist, the band members' setlist they use during the concert or instagram posts…

Should I just make one song “Session” as a catch-all?

Also sorry if this is not the correct topic lol, not sure why it's pinned but unused tbh, but I figured asking here would be better than making a new thread^^

On jazz shows, I usually put “Improvisation” if it's obviously that and not simply an unknown song I hadn't identified.

If it's more of a _______ Solo (where “________” equals whatever instrument)… even if an improvisation, I think it makes more sense to note the solo not the improv part per se. Or the improv part can be put in an @Info tag:

Glockenspiel Solo @Info[improvised with a paperclip]

if it's listed as something like “Session” on an official bluray, I'd go with what the artist calls it. If they have a Session with 5 distinct improv pieces, I'd likely list it as:

Improvisation
Improvisation
Improvisation
Improvisation
Improvisation

Or as:

Improvisation 1
Improvisation 2
Improvisation 3
Improvisation 4
Improvisation 5

I don't think there's any hard & fast rull on it. It's a tough nut to crack.

Is there a way to edit the name of a tour? Throughout 2021 and 2022, JMSN has been performing on his “Heals Me Tour” in support of his newest album Heals Me:

https://iamjmsn.com/tour/

However, on this site the tour is listed as “Heal Me Tour” without the “s”:

https://www.setlist.fm/search?artist=53d06385&query=tour:%28Heal+Me+Tour+Part+1%29

It's a small thing, but is there a way to edit the typo?

Is there a way to edit the name of a tour?

Yes, batch edits for tours can be done by moderators. Apart from that, any user can edit the tour of an existing setlist. In this case this would have meant adding a new tour and editing all affected setlists. That's quite a lot to ask though, so reporting to the forum was the way to go – I fixed it for you, thanks for reporting.

Next time, please don't use this “Tips & Tricks” topic though, it's actually to talk about lesser known features, not repeating problems. Thanks!

This trick used to work when we were using tabs, but we don't use these no more.

Right now I have “first of two nights” and “second of two nights”, but I was wondering if anyone knew a better way to write it
